“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, Dubai departures Absolute 123. We have an engine fire indication on number two engine. Request an immediate return to Dubai and fire services on the ground”.

ATC:

“Mayday Absolute 123, Dubai tower. Roger. Turn left to 270. Expect vectors to runway 30L. Emergency services activated. If possible please confirm POB and dangerous goods.”

Pilot:

“Turn left 270, expecting 30L for landing. We have 264 POB and no dangerous goods”.

Report what you understood:

I understood that Absolute 123 had a fire indication on engine number two after takeoff from Dubai. The pilot requests an immediate return to Dubai airport and fire brigade on the ground. Dubai tower gives vectors to return and asks for POB and if there are dangerous goods onboard. The pilot reads back the vectors and reports he has 264 POB and no dangerous goods.

Question:

What actions do you take in an engine fire situation?

We usually start a memory items checklist which usually involved identifying the engine on fire, shutting it down and activating the fire extinguisher. If the fire is extinguished we will stabilize the situation and divert to the nearest airport. If it is not extinguished, we will use the second fire extinguisher and start an immediate diversion.
